One hundred and two passengers sailed on the Mayflower seeking a new life in America. Forty one were Pilgrims—men and women seeking freedom to worship God as they chose. The rest were artisans, craftsmen, and skilled workers along with many children. Upon reaching the shores of Cape Cod, the passengers constructed a document that would enable this body of people to function for the good of the colony, the first document of self-governance in the new land. The words of this document, now known as the Mayflower Compact, are as follows:
IN THE NAME OF GOD, AMEN. We, whose names are underwritten, the Loyal Subjects of our dread Sovereign Lord King James, by the Grace of God, of Great Britain, France, and Ireland, King, Defender of the Faith, &c. Having undertaken for the Glory of God, and Advancement of the Christian Faith, and the Honour of our King and Country, a Voyage to plant the first Colony in the northern Parts of Virginia; Do by these Presents, solemnly and mutually, in the Presence of God and one another, covenant and combine ourselves together into a civil Body Politick, for our better Ordering and Preservation, and Furtherance of the Ends aforesaid: And by Virtue hereof do enact, constitute, and frame, such just and equal Laws, Ordinances, Acts, Constitutions, and Officers, from time to time, as shall be thought most meet and convenient for the general Good of the Colony; unto which we promise all due Submission and Obedience. IN WITNESS whereof we have hereunto subscribed our names at Cape-Cod the eleventh of November, in the Reign of our Sovereign Lord King James, of England, France, and Ireland, the eighteenth, and of Scotland the fifty-fourth, Anno Domini; 1620.
The people entered into a covenant with God before they ever stepped foot on the land. They entrusted themselves to His care and declared that their intent was for His Glory and the Advancement of the Christian Faith.
A covenant is a binding agreement between two parties. Yahweh God, the eternal Creator of the Universe, takes covenant very seriously. To live in covenant with God brings His Presence, Power, Abundant Life and Favor to those in the covenant and to the land itself. To break the covenant results in the opposite; removing His favor and protection allows curses, death and desolation to ravage land and people.
No matter how people try to ignore this covenant and declare that God no longer has a place in this nation and that His Presence is irrelevant, it simply is not true. America belonged to God from the beginning and as long as there are people here that belong to Him and are crying out for His Presence and His government in the land, He hears our cries and has great mercy upon us all.
What followed in the years after the signing of the Mayflower Compact was revival and awakening to His Glory. What is about to pour out across this nation now is the another great awakening and the blessings of reformation.
God has received the repentance of His people on behalf of this land and has graciously given American another opportunity to host His Presence and receive His Glory. This is available to whosoever will believe and seek His face.
I declare to you today: THE AWAKENING HAS BEGUN!
Glory to God!
