After completing our study of David and Solomon last spring, I wondered about how to proceed with the rest of Kings and Chronicles. I’d read the stories of the Divided Kingdom many times, and knew that the material can be confusing and very repetitive if you can’t visualize the two kingdoms of Israel and Judah. I asked God about whether I should cover this material with the children. His response was so exciting! He gave me the idea to create a topographical map of the land of Israel and the surrounding nations. This would aid our understanding of the geography of the region and help us get familiar with the towns and cities in Israel. Then using Lego men, we are able to simulate the movement of the kings and armies mentioned in the Scriptures, as well as understand the distances traveled.
We are still using this map as we study the Assyrian and Babylonian exiles. Almost every week, we pull it out and show the movements of the latest invading armies. I can safely say that we all can listen to the current news and have a greater awareness of the places mentioned and their relationships to surrounding nations. It is my hope that the kids can have the layout of Israel and the Middle East imprinted on their hearts so that news from the Epicenter is easily understood.
So much of what we are now reading about the plans of Assyria and Babylon (modern-day Iran and Iraq) to dominate the known world of their day sound similar to what we hear in our news. God has given us the scriptures so that we can learn from history and not repeat the same mistakes. He gives us His Word so we can gain His wisdom. This is my prayer for these kids and myself, and for all God’s children, that we will seek to understand His Word and apply it to our world. He wants to reveal Himself in Israel (and to us), just as He did to the Hebrews of that day.
Join us in praying for an awakening in Israel and throughout the world. Jesus is coming soon!
